Merge or delete a customer

Combine two duplicate customer records into one, or delete a customer from Shopify for good, in Multi-Store Sync or the Dashboard. Neither can be undone.

Updated

On this page
  1. Merge two customers
  2. Delete a customer

Both actions are at the top of the customer’s page, in Multi-Store Sync and in the Dashboard. Neither can be undone. Merging is Admin only and goes to Approvals for an Admin to approve (from Multi-Store Sync, only when the workspace has an Admin); deleting changes the shop in Shopify straight away.

Merge two customers

  1. Open one of the two customers and click Merge customer.
  2. In Merge with customer, search for the other customer and pick them.
  3. Read Review merge. It shows the Resulting customer and a warning: orders, addresses, notes and tags from both customers are combined into one.
  4. Click Merge customers, or Back to choose someone else.

When it is done, the page shows the resulting customer.

When a merge reaches the shop

Merging customers is Admin only in Approval Settings, and this cannot be relaxed.

  • In the Dashboard: the merge is sent to Approvals. You see Sent for approval — an Admin approves it in Approvals, with View in Approvals. Nothing is written to the shop until a member with the Admin role approves it, even when an Admin made the request. Both customers stay as they are until then.
  • In Multi-Store Sync (Shopify admin): when the workspace has at least one Admin, it is sent to Approvals in the StoreFleet Dashboard, and you see Sent for approval. An Admin approves it in StoreFleet Dashboard → Approvals. If nobody in the workspace has the Admin role yet, for example because no one uses the Dashboard, Multi-Store Sync writes it to Shopify right away as before.

See Approve or reject a change.

Shopify blocks a merge when the combined note would be too long, or when the combined customer would have too many tags. The review tells you which; shorten a note or remove some tags, then try again.

In Multi-Store Sync, the first merge may ask you to approve an extra permission. Approve it when Shopify asks, then try again. If you decline, nothing is merged.

Delete a customer

  1. Open the customer and click Delete customer.
  2. Read Delete this customer? and click Delete customer to confirm.

The customer is permanently deleted from Shopify and you return to the customer list.
