Edit navigation menus

Add, edit and delete the navigation menus of a Shopify storefront: link items to products, collections, pages or a URL, nest them and change their order.

Menus are the navigation your theme shows, such as the main menu and the footer menu. The Menus list shows each menu and how many items it has.

Open Menus

  • In Multi-Store Sync (Shopify admin): click Content, then the Menus tab. You can also click Online store, then Navigation. If you have linked more than one shop, pick the shop with the store switcher at the top.
  • In the Dashboard: open Content → Menus and pick the shop in the header.

Add a menu

  1. Click Add menu.
  2. Enter the Title, for example Sidebar menu.
  3. Set the Handle. Themes use the handle to find the menu.
  4. Add items (see below) and click Save. In Multi-Store Sync, use Save in the save bar at the top of the page.

Add or edit a menu item

  1. Open the menu and click Add menu item, or click Edit on an existing item.
  2. Enter the Label customers see.
  3. Under Link, choose what the item points to: Home page, Product, Collection, All collections, Page, Blog, Blog post, Search, Policy, a catalog (Catalog in Multi-Store Sync, All products in the Dashboard) or a web address (URL in Multi-Store Sync, Web address in the Dashboard).
  4. For a web address, enter the URL. For a product, collection, page, blog or post, enter its ID or handle in Linked resource.
  5. Click Add (or Done when editing), then Save the menu.

Nest and reorder items

Each item has Move up and Move down buttons and a menu of more actions:

  • Add menu item to … adds a child item under it.
  • Nest … under the item above makes it a child of the item above.
  • Move … out one level moves a child item back up a level.
  • Delete … removes the item.

Click Save when the order looks right.

Delete menus

  1. Open the menu and click Delete menu, or tick one or more menus in the list and click Delete.
  2. Confirm. The menu and all of its items are deleted permanently.

When changes reach the shop

Saving writes the menu to Shopify straight away, from both Multi-Store Sync and the Dashboard. Menu changes do not wait on the Approvals page.
